New DOT Authority

DOT UPDATE · June 20, 2026

FMCSA Motus is here — and the MC number may be going away

FMCSA is modernizing how carriers register with its new Motus: USDOT Registration System, which launches to all users — new and existing — in May 2026. That part is settled.

Separately, FMCSA has proposed phasing out the separate MC/MX/FF docket numbers and showing your operating authority as a suffix on your USDOT number instead. This is not final — it would require a formal Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and public comment before it could take effect, and existing MC, MX, and FF numbers will not change.

What it means for you today: nothing changes. You obtain and use your operating authority the normal way. We’ll update this page if the proposal advances.
