Getting your DOT authority in District of Columbia

After your federal authority is granted, your truck registration and any state-level requirements run through District of Columbia’s own agencies. Below is the full checklist plus District of Columbia’s specific filings and official links.

Join a drug & alcohol consortium (C/TPA)

Pass a pre-employment drug test

IFTA (fuel-tax license)

Not applicable — the District of Columbia is NOT a member jurisdiction of the International Fuel Tax Agreement (along with Alaska and Hawaii) and does not issue IFTA licenses. A DC-based carrier must obtain its IFTA license through another IFTA member jurisdiction. The closest official DC reference is the DC DMV commercial carrier page.

Intrastate operating authority

Not a separate state certificate

The District does not require a separate state operating authority for a general for-hire intrastate property/freight carrier beyond the USDOT number; for-hire passenger service (taxi/limo) is separately regulated by the DC Department of For-Hire Vehicles and, within the metropolitan district, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Commission (WMATC), but standard freight intrastate operation does not have a separate DC authority.
